Press Release – September 16, 2025 – Paris, France
The Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PGHM), France’s elite alpine rescue unit, has chosen satellite beacons developed by Abeeway, operating through Echostar’s satellite constellation and supervised via the APIK platform, to ensure the safety of its personnel.
Abeeway is pleased to announce that its new satellite-based geo-safety beacon has been in use for the past three months by the PGHM. These beacons regularly transmit their position via Echostar satellites. The APIK solution complements the ecosystem by providing equipment management, mapping visualization, and APIs for routing data to GenLoc, a tool widely recognized by mountain rescuers.
These new satellite beacons build on the earlier terrestrial version already in service: lightweight, compact, and pocket-sized, with a battery life of 60 hours in active mode or up to two months on standby. They can be detected at long range (10 km) with high accuracy (30 cm), even in remote “white zones,” without requiring any user action.
This project brings together three leading players:
“We were looking for a tracking solution that could be used under any circumstances to support both risk management and operational command. Beyond the ability to send a status such as ‘POI’ or ‘SOS,’ we were convinced by the convergence of telephone connectivity via BLE, LoRaWAN in covered areas, and SATELLITE. The frequency of location messages enables efficient tracking. The technology provides remarkable autonomy for such a small device. We were also able to easily integrate the data into our systems.”
This project brings together three leading players:
“This collaboration illustrates the power of combining innovative IoT technology with satellite communications to enhance safety in critical environments. We are proud to contribute to the protection of those who risk their lives to save others.“
“We were impressed by the quality of service provided by Abeeway’s satellite beacon, as well as by the opportunities offered by Echostar’s radio solution. The combination of these two technologies enables us to deliver a reliable, cost-effective solution that allows more people to enjoy outdoor activities with peace of mind.”
