Brunei makes its water management smart with LoRaWAN

Press Release  – Paris & Bandar Seri Begawan – December 31, 2021

Anian, a Brunei-based IoT solutions provider, is deploying a nationwide LoRaWAN® network to improve city management, environmental monitoring, and agriculture, with a strong focus on Smart Water use cases. These deployments are powered by Actility’s ThingPark Enterprise platform and IoThink Solutions’ Kheiron IoT Suite.

Why Brunei turned to IoT

Flooding, wastewater failures, and water quality issues were recurring problems in Brunei. The Ministry of Development needed an integrated IoT solution covering:

  • Flood monitoring: frequent and unpredictable, sometimes disrupting airports within 20 minutes.
  • Wastewater pumping stations: frequent breakdowns due to debris and vibration, costing up to €100k per pump.
  • Leakage and water quality: costly to monitor with SCADA systems, requiring expensive wired infrastructure prone to theft.

The solution had to be scalable, resilient, and cost-effective, with hosting in Brunei’s government data center.

The IoT Deployment

  • Flood detection

Ultrasonic sensors + rain gauges to monitor river levels & rainfall.

  • Pumping stations

Vibration sensors, floats, ultrasonic level sensors, and gas detection for predictive maintenance.

  • Leakage & quality

Sensors in pipes and towers to track leaks, pressure, and water quality.

  • Network expansion

11 gateways already installed, 25–30 planned, with a target of 200 nationwide.

Flash flood detection

Flooding is the number one natural hazard in Brunei. With a hot and rainy climate, flash floods can strike within hours.
The Department of Drainage and Sewerage monitors sewerage and river levels across Brunei Muara to anticipate floods and detect abnormalities.

Until now, monitoring relied on telemetry or even manual readings, mobilizing significant manpower.

To create an effective preventive alert system, Anian deploys ultrasonic sensors connected via LoRaWAN® to track river water levels, combined with rain gauges/tipping buckets to monitor rainfall and water flow velocity.

At a critical airport, a nearby canal can go from dry to overflowing in 20 minutes, shutting down operations. While structural work is pending, the IoT system now provides immediate alerts to mitigate risks.

Protection of sewage pumping stations

Many Bruneians live near rivers or in stilt villages. Wastewater is treated and discharged into rivers, but overflows in pumping stations pollute water and cause odor nuisances. Until now, monitoring was partial, relying on SCADA at limited sites, or simply reactive maintenance after citizen complaints.

Breakdowns are costly: debris causes pump vibration, overheating, or explosions, with replacement costs reaching €50k–100k per pump.

The IoT solution enables:

  • Continuous vibration monitoring.
  • Floats & ultrasonic sensors to detect rising water in wells.
  • Detection of intruders, subcontractors, smoke, and hazardous gases (CO, H₂S, CO₂).

This enables predictive maintenance, acting upstream before failures occur and improving public satisfaction.

Leakage reduction and water quality

The Ministry of Development also needed better monitoring of leaks, pressure, and water quality.

Anian is deploying LoRaWAN® sensors directly in pipes and towers, alerting on leaks or contamination. 11 gateways are already installed on water towers via ThingPark Enterprise, with 25–30 planned soon and a goal of 200 nationwide.

Compared to SCADA systems (up to €150k per site, requiring wired power, shelters, and telecom infrastructure), wireless IoT reduces costs to €3k–4k per deployment—a factor of 20 cheaper.

Impacts & Benefits

Impact Area What Changes
Flood prevention Real-time alerts from river monitoring; improved preparedness for flash floods.
Pumping stations Predictive maintenance avoids breakdowns (€50k–100k per pump) and improves public satisfaction.
Leakage reduction Continuous monitoring of pipes & towers to detect leaks and pressure anomalies.
Water quality Live data ensures safer drinking water and faster incident response.
Cost efficiency Wireless IoT reduces installation costs from ~€150k (SCADA) to €3k–4k, dividing costs by 20.

The large-scale deployment of Birdz smart meters, connected through Orange’s nationwide LoRaWAN® network powered by Actility’s ThingPark platform, is radically transforming how Veolia manages water distribution, consumption, and customer relations.

Scalable & Multi-use IoT

Future Use Case Applications
Water networks Pressure, flow, leaks, reservoir levels, pump monitoring.
Tide monitoring For coastal and urban flood prevention.
Smart buildings & energy Air quality, security, water/electricity metering, data centers, parking.
Infrastructure Bridge vibration, crack monitoring, worker safety, weather sensors.
Environmental River water quality, air quality, meteorological data.

Voices from the Project

Nicolas Guillou - Co-Founder and CEO at ANIAN

The Kheiron platform is particularly convenient because it requires no coding, with a responsive mobile app. The technical support provided by the IoThink and Actility teams made the project a success. The advantage of Actility’s solution is its scalability. Actility is a telecom expert with a long history of working on large-scale IoT projects

Nicolas Jordan, COO at Actility

Once again, IoT, LPWAN and a collaboration of experts are enabling the deployment of effective solutions that aim to improve people’s lives, protect the environment and lower costs. We are happy to see the progress of such interesting projects in the Sultanate of Brunei and to work with Anian and IoThink Solutions on more and more new deployments
