Press Release – Paris, France – 4 February 2022
National Narrowband Network Company (NNNCo), operator of Australia’s national LoRaWAN® network powered by Actility, has signed a contract with European technology provider Wellness TechGroup to deliver IoT network coverage for 70,000 smart streetlights in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. The deployment will rely on a private LoRaWAN network built on Actility’s platform and managed directly on customer premises.
According to NNNCo’s press release, the project will span 200 square kilometers and deliver smart street lighting to more than 1.3 million residents. It is set to enhance community and road safety while cutting carbon emissions by up to 80%. The new infrastructure will also serve as a foundation for other smart city initiatives.
Montevideo’s upgraded lighting system will be one of the largest smart street lighting projects ever deployed over LoRaWAN. The technology was chosen for its low total cost of ownership, strong security, flexible deployment options, extended battery life, and access to a fast-growing ecosystem of compatible solutions.
The city will benefit from NNNCo’s N2N-DL IoT data layer, which leverages Actility’s state-of-the-art LoRaWAN network server platform. Together, they will deliver a simple, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT communication infrastructure capable of supporting an extensive range of smart city use cases.
The project will replace Montevideo’s current lighting system with LED technology and introduce a powerful, interoperable remote management solution. This upgrade is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 31,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year—approximately an 80% decrease. It will also enhance service quality and operational efficiency across the city through Wellness TechGroup’s TALQ-certified WeLight Manager CMS, LoRaWAN® Actis Nema 7 LPC nodes, and NNNCo’s LoRaWAN® network. Smart street lighting will significantly improve public and road safety, energy performance, and citizen experience, while enabling integration with other urban applications such as waste management and water conservation.
Under the agreement, Wellness TechGroup and NNNCo will also be able to provide additional services to Montevideo by allowing third-party customers to connect through the same LoRaWAN gateways. NNNCo will support these customers city-wide using its N2N-DL data aggregation layer and N-Tick device interoperability program.
As part of the deployment, Wellness TechGroup will install 70,000 Actis Plus Nema 7 LCP nodes for remote light-point control. These nodes will connect to the TALQ-certified WeLight Manager CMS, a powerful software platform that provides real-time insights into all data generated by the intelligent lighting system. In this setup, the luminaires effectively become data-enabled infrastructure, acting as central nodes within a broader IoT smart city ecosystem—extending well beyond lighting alone.
“This is a milestone contract in the establishment of NNNCo’s LoRaWAN® network as one of the world’s leading networks for smart streetlight use cases and we hope to facilitate similar projects in Australia and in other countries in the near future,” explained Mr Zagarella. This is a great example of Australian technology driving global Sustainable Development Goals”
“Smart cities leverage connected lights to reduce their energy footprint and cut down on maintenance costs. LoRaWAN is bringing great value by its flexibility, efficiency and easy deployment. I congratulate our great partner NNNco for winning such an impressive IoT project and we are looking forward to bringing our best support to make it a full success“
“We have deployed more than 300 smart lighting projects worldwide, where we are already managing almost 1 million points of lights in municipalities remotely. Our technology must help reduce costs, improve efficiency and environmental impact and provide a better service, but it must also serve citizens by improving their day-to-day. Montevideo will now have a more versatile lighting system, capable of responding to events and unforeseen events, facilitating a feeling of more security on the streets”
