Effective Strategies for LPWAN Network Implementation in Hazardous Zones

Hazardous industries combine the complexity of deploying an industrial-grade IoT network in a complex, often metallic and radio-unfriendly environment, with the additional constraint of hazardous zones which severely restrict the kind of equipment that may be deployed.

We will first address the winning strategies common to most industrial sites (planning for macro-diversity, careful dimensioning) and underline the importance of quality-adaptive control of RF parameters to keep the network QoS stable through ongoing scaling and frequent topology changes. We will then explain why LoRaWAN is a particularly attractive technology for sensors in hazardous environments by explaining some key points of the ATEX/IECEx certification requirements and introduce the notion of gateways certified for deployment in hazardous zones.

Challenges of Deploying LoRaWAN Gateways in Hazardous Areas

Deploying long-range wireless networks like LoRaWAN in hazardous industrial environments requires careful planning and specialized equipment to ensure reliable connectivity and safe operation. The abundant metal infrastructure found in process units can easily block radio signals, so simply adding one or two gateways in safe areas to cover your site will not provide comprehensive coverage for IIoT connectivity. Certified wireless enclosures from Extronics mean you can install your LoRaWAN gateway of choice directly in Zone 1/21 and Class 1/ Division 1 or Zone 2/22 and Class 2/ Division 2 areas to enable robust connectivity.
