Hype Cycle for IoT Standards and Protocols, Gartner, 2020

The Hype Cycle is Gartner’s branded graphical presentation of the maturity of emerging technologies through five phases (see graph below). In this report Gartner provides a view into tomorrow’s IoT technology standards like LoRaWAN® and shows how Gartner sees some of the most interesting and significant standards and protocols relating to the IoT, with Actility as one of its Sample Vendors.

Alalyzed alongside over 15 other connectivity standards like LTE-M and NB-IoT, LoRa is considered by Gartner to be in its “Early Mainstream” maturity, and its vendors and adoption is rapidly evolving. It means also that the technology is sliding into the “Trough of Disillusionment”  and will then enter the “Slope of Enlightenment” with a significant growth. Gartner sees LoRa as less than two years to mainstream adoption.

Key Findings of the report on the Business Impact of LoRa technology:

  • “The key business impact is operating expenditure (opex) savings from object connectivity. LoRa infrastructure enables the long-range connection of objects with both limited bandwidth requirements and low-traffic communications, thus enabling very low power consumption and a battery life of a decade or more, using unlicensed spectrum. Over the longer term, LoRa will be a viable technology for specific use cases.”
  • “LPWAs are already offering connectivity outside the traditional cellular networks, both in terms of pricing and business model. LoRa can be deployed as a public or private network.”
  • “LPWA hardware (both the infrastructure and the endpoints) is less expensive than cellular systems. The increased range of LPWA technologies means fewer base stations, further reducing costs.”
